SAVE LAGOS BRT: RESTORE THE LAGOSIANS TRANSPORT LIFELINE

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Lagos currently operates at an extremely worrisome level. The system which was previously celebrated as an organized transportation solution in our active city has turned into a poor representation of its former self. Passengers endure long delays at bus stops while waiting for nonexistent buses until they must rely on cost-prohibitive services from other transport companies. The decay of unrepaired BRT buses makes the entire BRT investment practice questionable because we do not take care of what we own.

Your administration has always promoted Lagos as a model city but the essential problem of functional public mass transit continues to persist. The initial implementation of BRT buses as a congestion solution and affordable transport system now creates additional difficulties because these buses have disappeared from the streets. A neglected home will disintegrate according to the wise report which seems to describe our BRT system. Proper management of these buses should have sustained their operational service to passengers while they remain unused in depot storage.

The existence of a dynamic and growing urban city depends on its transportation system. Economic growth remains impossible without daily struggles of workers and businesses to find proper mobility. It was emphasized that a nation's greatness is not solely determined by government actions, but by the willingness of its citizens to serve beyond what the state can offer, a sentiment famously expressed by John F. Kennedy when he urged Americans not to ask what their country could do for them, but what they could do for their country. People of Lagos have fulfilled their end by paying fares and taxes and they deserve to see the government provide its promised responsibilities. The government bears a responsibility to perform bus repairs and conduct scheduled maintenance procedures without compromise.

People in Lagos City need superior service standards. No more excuses should be made for a project meant to serve the public, because projects designed to serve the public should be treated with urgency, accountability, and integrity. The BRT system needs necessary agencies to bring its complete restoration to reality. The absence of current maintenance efforts could transform the entire project into yet another failed initiative which future generations will remember those who permitted this failure.

Your Excellency, a stitch in time saves nine. The longer this neglect continues, the heavier the burden on the people and the economy. The BRT system is not just a transportation project; it is the lifeline of the working class, the engine of commerce, and a symbol of Lagos' progress. Immediate action will not only restore the trust of the people but also solidify your legacy as a leader who safeguarded a vital public asset. The public is watching, and history will remember those who chose to act decisively. Let Lagos work for everyone.

Sincerely,

Shuaib Babatunde Adebayo (Optimistic)
